How do Neck Problems Cause Headaches? (Cervicogenic Headaches)
Neck Based Headaches (cervicogenic) are most often what we think of as Tension headaches and we often attribute them to stress, hormones, migraines but very often the source is in the neck and shoulders. The reason we feel neck problems as headaches at times is because of an overlap in the nerves supplying our head and neck. This overlap can cause an issue in our neck to be sensed by our brains as head pain. Each of us will be more or less prone to this referred pain from our neck to our head depending on our how we are built.
Common Symptoms of Neck Based/Tension Headaches Include
Pain often starts at the top of the neck (base of the skull) and spreads along one side of the head, and can go as far as the eye but usually no further
Very often but not always confined to one side of the neck and head
The most tender point in the neck is often underneath the ridge of the skull at the top of the neck (suboccipital region).
May have similar symptoms to migraines without aura (no weakness, numbness, vomiting, light sensitivity etc…)
Pain may be made worse by prolonged postures and/or certain neck movements
How are we so Successful in Tension/Cervical Headache Treatment? We have a nearly flawless success rate in managing neck based headaches mainly because of our ability to detect problems contributing to poor neck functionf from head to toe. We take the time and have the expertise to find problems many others miss, which may be aggravating neck problems. We then develop a comprehensive treatment and rehabilitation program that is both easy to follow and brings about fast & long term improvements.
Treatment may include massage for tight muscles, mobilizations/manipulation for restricted joint motion.
Manipulation: Some people are apprehensive about manipulation. I can assure you that you do not need to have manipulation if you do not want it, I have many other ways to restore joint motion. Manipulation is however the most effective way and most people who are a bit apprehensive before manipulation wonder why they were after. It if not painful and generally provides an immediate sense of relief.
Rehabilitation exercises are specifically designed to ensure proper mobility and stability in key areas (core, neck, hips, shoulder blades). We will also address postural issues, breathing, and stress reduction as needed. postural corrections, neck strengthening, breathing corrections, stress reduction techniques. There may also be daily habit changes to reduce stress and strain.
